Getting to the Canadian Rockies
There are three major gateways into the Canadian Rockies: Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. Each city features an international airport with car rental agencies and bus transportation. Calgary, at the foothills of the Rockies, is the most common entry point into the region due to its close proximity to the major townsite destinations of Canmore, Banff and Lake Louise. A passenger train service operates to Jasper from Vancouver and Edmonton. Calgary does not have passenger train service.
There are daily shuttle buses direct from the Calgary airport to Banff, Canmore and Lake Louise. Bus tours to the major scenic attractions and recreational activities operate daily in summer from Canmore, Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper. During the winter, ski shuttle service operates from Canmore and Banff into Sunshine Village and Lake Louise.
There are also small airports in Banff, Fairmont and Cranbrook. Cranbrook is the largest regional airport in the Canadian Rockies and is working hard on funding for expansion into an international airport.
