Activities in Canadian Rockies

Sightseeing in the Canadian Rockies

It's what draws millions of visitors every year to Canada’s favourite mountain playground – spectacular scenery from every angle. Around every corner, towering glacier capped mountains, emerald lakes and untamed wildlife make the Canadian Rockies the ultimate sightseeing destination. Trains, planes, helicopters, automobiles, gondolas, snocoaches, buses, horse powered carriages and your own two feet all serve to provide dramatic vistas of what many travel magazines have recognized as the 'prettiest place on Earth'.

There is more to see or do in the Canadian Rockies than one can possibly hope to encapsulate into a single vacation. Working with an Ultimate Rockies destination specialist will help you make the most of your time and ambitions during your visit. Below, we discuss some of the more popular sightseeing activities and attractions that are guaranteed to leave you in awe.

The Columbia Icefield is among the largest non-polar accumulations of ice in North America and is one of the Canadian Rockies' most popular sightseeing attractions. This huge icefield spawns eight major glaciers; rivers of ice that grind rock into powder and change landscapes as they move. Yet these glaciers, and the plants and wildlife that live nearby, are really very fragile. In these harsh and forbidding surroundings, survival is a daily struggle - this is truly life at the edge! Brewster’s amazing SnoCoach Tour onto the surface of the Athabasca Glacier make it easy for you to experience the incredible beauty of this astonishing environment. Aboard a unique SnoCoach, and in the company of a knowledgeable driver/guide, you’ll journey in safety and comfort to a world that would otherwise be remote and inaccessible. Completed in the spring of 1996, the Icefield Centre combines many functions in a single efficient and environmentally sensitive structure. Dining, information, shopping, accommodation, an extensive Parks Canada Interpretive Centre are all available under one roof: The lcefield Centre. SnoCoach tours run from mid-April to mid-October and do not require reservations.

Gondolas at Banff’s Sulphur Mountain, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort near Golden, Lake Louise, Sunshine Village, and Jasper are a tremendous way to get a birds-eye view of the mountain ranges and valleys with minimal expense and physical effort. Sulphur Mountain, Lake Louise and Kicking Horse provide superb dining at the top of the mountain as well. Additionally, chair lifts that operate year round at Kimberley Alpine Resort, Panorama Mountain Village and Fernie also provide excellent sightseeing opportunities.

Another great way to get a view of the fabulous Rockies landscape from the clouds is with a heli sightseeing or flightseeing trip. Fly along the Continental Divide and view Banff and Jasper National Parks as well as the Columbia Icefield in all their majesty from up above.

If staying firm to the ground is more your style, endless bus tours will usher you around to all of the biggest sightseeing attractions throughout Banff, Jasper and Yoho National Park. Rocky Mountain Railtours (offered through Ultimate Rockies) offers one of the most grandiose ways to capture the sights between Vancouver and Calgary and is an unforgettable experience.

Sightseeing by car is the most cost-effective method, but will lack in the educational component that enhances the overall experience. If busy tour buses aren't your style, be sure to cruise the Canadian Rockies' most celebrated and scenic highway, the Icefields Parkway. Considered one of the most scenic highways in the world, the Icefields Parkway offers an ever changing view of waterfalls, emerald lakes, alpine meadows and snow-capped peaks. For two hundred and thirty kilometres, from Lake Louise to the Jasper townsite, the Parkway winds along the shoulder of the Great Divide and passes by the spectacular mountains of the Eastern Main Ranges of the Canadian Rockies. It follows the headwaters of three major rivers and crosses two major passes en route. Leaving from Banff, travelers follow the Bow, Mistaya and North Saskatchewan Rivers and experience such spectacular sights as Lake Louise, Bow Lake, Peyto and Crowfoot Glaciers, Mistaya Canyon and the Weeping Wall. From Jasper, the route passes Athabasca Falls and the Sunwapta Canyon. It is an unmatched majestic beauty and a wilderness habitat for elk, bighorn sheep, moose, mountain goat and both grizzly and black bears.

The Glacier Landing Ski Plane Adventure
Skiplane adventures combine a scenic flight in the Canadian Rockies with a landing on the Columbia Icefield or on one of the other many glaciers along the Continental Divide. We use our ski-equipped Cessna 185 and experienced pilot for our glacier landings.

We carry out the same scenic flight as in the Ultimate Columbia Icefields tour but add a landing on one of the high icefields along the way. Glaciers and icefields are one of the most fascinating aspects of the mountain environment in the Canadian Rockies. From the highway you typically see only the edge of the icefield. Our ski-plane landing flights place you on the surface in the middle of the icefield where you can appreciate its immense size.

We will leave the airplane and have twenty minutes to spend walking nearby, taking photos and experiencing the cold thin air typical of this high altitude environment at 2,700 meters (9,000 feet) above sea level. Underfoot are several meters of snow on top of several hundred meters of solid glacial ice! We are surrounded by some of the highest and most remote peaks in the Rockies.
