Ski Resort Overview
Starting with the first ski runs cut in 1926, Banff Mount Norquay now encompasses a wide variety of terrain to suit everyone. Ranging from gentle beginner runs that provide areas to build confidence and skill, up to heart pounding double black diamond runs that will challenge any expert.
Banff Mount Norquay looms high above the townsite of Banff for all to see, but indeed, it is the locals’ best kept secret. There is plenty of expert terrain and newly cut novice runs that snake gently through the Alberta forest, but the ski area remains quieter and more serene that its formidable neighbours: Sunshine Village and Lake Louise.
Norquay’s slopes are visible from the streets of Banff. Its reputation as a locals’ area is thanks to the ski area’s steep, challenging runs and its uncrowded lifts. Norquay’s vertical of 1,650 feet (503 metres) includes nice expert terrain, with plenty of black and double-black diamond trails. Norquay’s Mystic Ridge area caters to intermediates.
The North American chair rises up from Norquay’s new Cascade Lodge and feeds double-black and black runs exclusively, including Lone Pine and North American, Gun Run and Valley of Ten. Intermediates can play at Mystic Ridge, served by an express quad with a number of cruising runs. Beginners can practice on Magic Carpet, or on some of the ski area’s new beginner runs at Valley of the Ten and Elves’ Alley.
Norquay is near the heart of Banff, one of Canada’s prettiest towns deep in the wilds of the Rockies. The town is filled with a full range of restaurants, quaint shops and a variety of accommodations. The nightlife is fun and the dining superb.
Where to Stay
There is no lodging directly at the base of Mount Norquay, but thousands of beds to suit all budgets are just minutes away in the town of Banff. The town of Banff offers an exceptional variety of lodging from ultra luxurious hotels like the Fairmont Banff Springs and the Rimrock to economical lodges like the Aspen Inn and Banff International Hostel. Banff also boasts a modest inventory of 2 bedroom chalet style accommodation at resorts like Douglas Fir, Banff Rocky Mountain Resort and Hidden Ridge. An increasingly popular alternative to Banff is the scenic town of Canmore just 10 minutes east along the TransCanada Highway. Canmore features a wide array of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom condos and the Alberta Rockies' best selection of vacation homes - ideal for families that want the comforts of home (and the savings of not eating out in restaurants every night). Canmore also features a number of hotels that are generally less expensive than their counterparts in Banff.
Regardless of your budget, Ultimate Rockies offers numerous lodging options in Lake Louise, Banff and Canmore that will keep you warm and cozy at a cost that will keep you smiling the whole trip.
